Discover some of Devon's finest ciders with our new monthly case. Devon has a long history of producing great cider and was once home to producers like Gaymers - now sold off to commercial cider brands.
But the old orchards remain, the sun still shines, and new generations of cider-makers have taken the reins and reinvigorated the Devon cider industry. Our tasting panel have whittled this down to a case of six great ciders from three producers.
Hunts Cider - The Traditional Producer
Hunts have been crafting cider in the glorious South Hams coastal area of South Devon since 1805. Using old orchards and traditional techniques, Hunts is now run by the sixth generation of the family.
Thrasher (Medium Dry, 6.2% ABV) - A refreshing, lightly-sparkling medium-dry cider. This really hits the spot after a hard days’ work on the 'Thrasher'.
'Andsome Bay (Medium Sweet, 4.8% ABV) - Old Mr Hunt used to say "Yer! Come try! ‘Tis proper ‘Andsome Bay.” He wasn’t wrong.
Sandford Orchards - The Modern Cider Producer
Sandford Orchards have done a lot to put Devon Cider back on the map. Set up a few years ago by Barny, and now based in an old cider mill just North of Exeter, they are consistently producing a range of interesting and boundary-pushing ciders.
Apple & Oak (Dry, 6.8% ABV) - A dry vintage cider aged in new oak barrels. Showcasing youthful, ripe, bittersweet apple flavours, complemented by notes of vanilla and toasty oak.
Sandford Reserve (Medium Dry, 7.4% ABV) - A classic, full-bodied, tannic cider aged in old sherry casks for a unique and complex yet mellow style.
Ridge & Furrow - The Artisan Producer
Justin is making some great cider in East Devon, near Cullompton, from newly-restored orchards dating back over 100 years. The trees are planted along ridges and furrows to allow for drainage in between.
Medium (5% ABV) - Produced using a technique called 'arrested fermentation' where fermentation is stopped before all of the sugar turns into alcohol, creating a natural sweetness. Winner of Supreme Champion at the Devon County Show 2019.
Medium Sweet (4.5% ABV) - Fermentation is halted earlier, creating a slightly sweeter cider with a lower alcohol content. A light, smooth and easy-drinking summer cider.
